Why some Environmentally concerned Plastmo employees have Worked with Vinyl for 25 YearsPVC is made from natural gas and salt (sodium chloride). Being easily recyclable with low energy input it conserves energy, metals, and forests. |

| Plastmo recycles as much PVC as possible into specialty products.
However used vinyl building materials are not easily recycled in North America
at this time. The reason is stated to be economics. The reality is social
values. Thirty years ago usable wood was left in the forest due to "economics".
Reality was we did not choose to value forests, today that same wood is
chipped. Today we would rather bury scrap PVC in landfills than process it. At
least this PVC has the potential to be mined in the future and recycled or
burned for its latent energy. The wood will have become methane, carbon dioxide
and water, and the metals, difficult to recover oxides. To Plastmo Introductory page. May 02, 2000 |
PVC products reduce the need to harvest trees, reduce scars from
open pit mines, and air / water pollution from metal processing . Think carefully about your choices in materials and support social choices enabling recycling. PVC manufacturers may save more forests than environmental groups however we need both to promote recycling and promote the value of natural resources. Given our culture's appetite for material goods PVC is an environmentally low impact material for producing those goods. Chlorofiles International environmentally concerned PVC workers PVC links |
